The European Accessibility Act and e-commerce

Since 28 June 2025, the national laws transposing Directive (EU) 2019/882 apply to e-commerce services offered to consumers in the EU — including identification, security and payment functions.

General information only — not legal advice. Always check the national law of the countries you sell to and consult a qualified adviser.

Who

Businesses providing e-commerce services to EU consumers. Micro-enterprises providing services (fewer than 10 employees and ≤ €2M turnover or balance sheet) are exempt.

What

Perceivable, operable, understandable and robust websites and apps — in practice assessed against EN 301 549, which incorporates WCAG success criteria.

Checkout

Identification, security and payment functions delivered as part of the service must be accessible, and accessibility information about products must be provided when available.
