Shopify accessibility checker
Shopify accessibility monitoring for the purchase journey
Shopify themes are built from shared sections and snippets, and apps inject their own markup into product pages and carts. One app update can change the accessibility of every product page overnight.
How we test Shopify stores
- Detects the Shopify storefront and uses sitemap_products and sitemap_collections to pick representative pages
- Adds a product to the cart with the keyboard through the theme's product form (form action /cart/add)
- Tests cart drawers and cart notifications opened by the theme
- Opens /cart and follows the checkout button to the checkout information step
- Probes validation on the contact field without submitting any payment step
The test never enters payment details and never places an order.
Common Shopify accessibility pitfalls
Variant pickers built as custom swatches
Colour and size swatches are often styled radio buttons whose labels are hidden or whose inputs are removed from the tab order.
Cart drawer focus
Many themes open a drawer after add-to-cart without moving focus into it, or leave it focusable when closed.
App blocks without names
Reviews, wishlist and upsell apps frequently add icon buttons without accessible names.
Dynamic checkout buttons
Express payment buttons are rendered in iframes by payment providers; check they have titles and do not trap focus.
Keeping a Shopify store accessible
- Test after each theme update and each new app install
- Prefer Online Store 2.0 themes that are regularly updated
- Check the product form with a variant that is sold out — disabled states are often unannounced

Shopify FAQ
Does Shopify's checkout count as my responsibility?
The checkout is hosted by Shopify, but it is part of the service you provide to consumers. Customisations you add (checkout extensions, scripts, branding colours) can affect its accessibility. Monitor it like the rest of your store.
Can you test password-protected stores?
Not yet: the scanner only tests publicly reachable storefronts.
